Our story
Four generations on Market Street.
DeVries & Co has stood in Detroit's Eastern Market since 1887 — first a wholesale butter-and-egg house, today a specialty grocer importing cheese from fourteen countries and roasting coffee in small batches. Through every decade, the counter has stayed the same: cut to order, weighed by hand, sold by people who know the product.
The DeVries family opens a wholesale provisions house in Detroit’s Eastern Market, supplying the city’s grocers and restaurants.
The shop opens its doors to the public, cutting cheese and grinding coffee to order for market-goers.
DeVries begins importing specialty cheese directly, eventually sourcing from fourteen different countries.
Small-batch coffee roasting begins in-house, including the signature DeVries 1887 Blend.
Now fourth-generation family-run, DeVries ships specialty provisions nationwide from the same corner of Eastern Market.
